A Brief History

During the later part of the year 1958 the residents of the Grand Lake Rd. area realized the need for adequate fire protection. The area at that time was covered by the City of Sydney, Sydney River and Mira Road Fire Departments. Several meetings were held with County and City Officials for improved fire protection and we were informed that no further assistance could be given at that time. In view of this, a meeting of interested residents was held in the Lakevale School on February 16th, 1959 and the Grand Lake Rd. Volunteer Fire Department was formed.

The Hall

A suitable piece of land was then purchased as a site for the fire station. This being done, a building located at the Sterling Mines acquired and moved to the Grand Lake Rd. site This building was then remodeled and enlarged to make it more suitable for our purpose. This work was done under the direction of Stanley Burton along with volunteer labor. Having accomplished these things, we were fortunate in acquiring a Civil Defense Training Pumper. Members of the fire department took training on this truck and other aspects of fire fighting and we were ready for a fire.

The First Chief

The First Fire Chief of the Grand Lake Road Volutneer Fire Department was Chief Dougal Mac Aulay Sr. Who held this position for over twenty five years until his retirement.
